Mission, British Columbia
1st West Heights — All Sections
Dates: May 5
Location: Mission Public Library
On May 5th 2017, the 1st West Heights will be participating in Scouts Canada’s 8th annual Good Turn Week by helping the members in their community who need it most. They will be at the Mission Public Library packing 50 backpacks with hand-picked care items to distribute to the at-risk youth in Mission, Alberta.
The 1st West Heights came together and brainstormed ways to make their town, Mission, a better place. They wanted to help the homeless members of their community and consulted Mission Youth House “MYHouse” for assistance in determining the area that was in need the most. They suggested we help the youth who are in treatment. They are often taken into treatment with little to no possessions. As this is a difficult time for them as they work to overcome their issues and build towards a better future, the 1st West Heights have taken it upon themselves to help the youth for Scouts Canada’s 8th annual Good Turn Week.
They will be providing backpacks filled with essential items, including personal hygiene products, (shampoo, deodorant, toothbrush, etc.), socks, combs and snacks. Along with the basics, they want to provide them with things that can provide them comfort in this difficult time. Some examples of these would be, small stuffy, puzzle books and handcrafted notes of encouragement from Beavers and Cubs.
A speaker from MYHouse will come and educate the Scouts about resources available to youth at risk in their community. The goal is that the Scouts will be ambassadors, sharing information about these resources with other youth in their schools, neighbourhoods and communities who may need help accessing this support.
