Doing a good deed is a big part of what it means to be a Scout, and Good Turn Week is when Scouts go crazy doing Good Turns. Their goal is to do something that will have a positive impact on their communities, neighbours, and environment. They hope by doing a good turn, the recipients will be inspired to do their own, creating a cycle of good will across the country. In Pickering Ontario, the Good Turn mood is in full swing as Scouts begin the Great Pasta Challenge.
After learning about the increasing need for donations at local foodbanks, Al Harris, Scouter with the 7th Pickering, initiated the 2nd Great Pasta Challenge. Al wanted to challenge his Scout Group to participate in this Good Turn, so he donated 100 packages of pasta and challenged his Group to match it. Each Section’s Leader keeps track of the progress, while encouraging the other youth to participate as well. It did not take long before the 7th Pickering Scout Group matched the 100 packages of pasta and now, other Groups have joined in. The Great Pasta Challenge continues to grow, not only with Scouts, but local Churches and a Ford dealership has picked up the challenge. Scouts are bringing the challenge to their schools, while parents challenge their coworkers. The youth, Scouts, and whole community are challenging each other to make this the greatest and most successful pasta challenge yet.
This project has a clear positive impact on the community, but it also has a positive impact on the youth. Each Section has a youth lead, who keeps tallies the progress being made, and keeps the youth motivated to continue raising awareness to make this project a success. Good Turn Week teaches our Youth a very special and important lesson, they can make a difference. Just as Scouts learn to leave their campsites better than they found them, they’re learning to leave the world and the people around them better than they found them. They use their teamwork and leadership skills to rally together and make a bigger difference in their community than they could ever make on their own.
The goal for the Great Pasta Challenge is to collect 5,000 packages of pasta for local foodbanks. They started in March, and the campaign is running in high gear during Good Turn Week, April 29th to May 7th. They will be donating the pasta to the Salvation Army and Paul’s Foodbank on May 2nd. The Scouts encourage everyone to participate in The Great Pasta Challenge.
It’s amazing what Scouts can do when they come together behind a common goal and the Great Pasta Challenge is no exception. They are on track to achieve their goal to collect 5,000 packages of pasta to donate to local food banks and you can keep track of the Great Pasta Challenge’s progress by following the hashtag #gr8pastachallenge on Twitter.
