Vancouver British Columbia
9th St. Thomas Scout Group
By Inaya Ali
Tony Mark and the 9th St. Thomas Scout Troop will be handing out umbrellas on April 23, 2016 at the Commercial-Broadway sky train station from 10:30am-11:30am as part of Scouts Canada’s good turn week campaign. This week encourages Scouts of all ages to give back to the community. Good turn week also allows for the community to see the amazing things Scouts does for the community. The Scouts Promise says to promise to help people at all times and Good Turn Week does just that. All sections of Scouting from beavers to Rovers will be handing out umbrellas but they are not to be kept. The goal is to get the umbrellas passed to as many people as possible, when giving the sharing umbrella to the next person make sure to let them know to pass it on. Individuals are requested to continue the good turn and keep passing on the legacy creating a chain of kindness.
The St. Thomas Troop was inspired by this idea when Tony saw a business handing out free items while he was walking one day. We decided to build on this idea and give out umbrellas as we often see people getting soaked in the rain in Vancouver. Where we are famous for our rain. We thought that if someone were to give us an umbrella on a rainy day how appreciative we would be. Tony and the St. Thomas Scouts have been wanting to make this happen for two years and with the opportunity to carry out the Good Turn this year they are more excited than ever. What we thought was going to be a small project has turned into a huge event. We had originally thought we would give out 50 umbrellas but we are now aiming to give out 300 umbrellas. We will also be sending umbrellas to the business that gave Tony the idea along with a note thanking them for giving him the inspiration for this project.
If you happen to find a badly damaged umbrella do not hesitate to dispose of it. Do not share broken umbrellas.
