224 Sandstone Valley – Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts
Dates: April 27
Location: Sandstone Park
The 224th Sandstone Valley Scouts Group is participating in this year’s Good Turn Week by helping with a local community project called, Sandstone Skating Oval. This oval is a small island located in the north east corner of Sandstone Park in Calgary, Alberta. The Scouts began planning this project in October 2016, making sure they had all the pieces in place to start the work over Good Turn Week. The Group wants to help with this project because they want to do something for the whole community to enjoy and that brings friends and families together to enjoy the outdoors.
Partnering with the Sandstone MacEwan Community Association, the Groups are working together to create a relaxing, recreational setting on the island. On April 27th 2017, the Beavers will be adding a picnic table, planting flowers and putting in a barrier to make the island more uniform. The Cubs are going to clean up around the outside of the rink, putting seeds on it to grow grass and flowers. The Scouts plan on repainting and refurbishing the old benches and replace broken parts to make them look like new. They also hope to add a gazebo to the island so people can use it whether it is rain or shine.
This island is in the shape of an oval, the Scouts are making a recreational setting in the middle of the oval and around the outside is an ice skating rink in the winter. During the warmer seasons, the rink dries up and the grass grows, making the island usable all year round. They already have benches along the outside of the rink, but with the Scouts help, we can have more and newer benches to provide more areas for people to sit. The 224th Sandstone Valley Scouts Group is very excited to do a good turn and make this park a convenient, fun and relaxing place for the community to come together and enjoy the outdoors.
